City Introduction

Nanjing City (English: Nanjing City), Ning, also known as "Jinling", "Jiankang", and "Shitou City", is a prefecture level city under the jurisdiction of Jiangsu Province, China. It is the capital of Jiangsu Province, a sub provincial city, and a mega city. It is located in the southwest of Jiangsu Province, downstream of the Yangtze River, and is a city in the central area of the Yangtze River Delta. Nanjing city belongs to the northern subtropical humid monsoon climate, with distinct four seasons and abundant rainfall. Spring and autumn are short, winter and summer are long, and the annual temperature difference is large. It is known as the "Natural Geological Museum", with multiple geomorphic units such as the Yangtze River floodplain, water rich soft soil, hills, and karst coexisting. The total area is 6587.04 square kilometers. As of September 2024, Nanjing City has jurisdiction over 11 districts. At the end of 2024, the permanent population of Nanjing was 9.577 million. The Nanjing dialect is Jianghuai Mandarin.

Nanjing is an important central city in eastern China approved by the State Council, a national historic and cultural city, an international comprehensive transportation hub, a national advanced manufacturing base, an eastern industrial innovation center, a regional scientific and technological innovation highland, an eastern modern service industry center, a regional shipping logistics center, and the headquarters of the Eastern Warzone Command of the Chinese People's Liberation Army. Nanjing is known as the "ancient capital of six dynasties" and the "metropolis of ten generations", with its cultural influence reaching the entire East Asian region.

The Nanjing area had ancient human activities from 1 to 1.2 million years ago. Nanjing was founded in the late Shang Dynasty more than 3100 years ago [474], and the first year of Huanglong in the Eastern Wu Dynasty (229 AD) marked the beginning of Nanjing's capital. On April 23, 1949, Nanjing was liberated. In 1953, it was designated as the capital of Jiangsu Province, and in 1994, it was designated as a sub provincial city.

The four pillar industries of steel, petrochemicals, automobiles, and electronics are the "basic pillars" of Nanjing's economy. Nanjing is one of the top ten economic and manufacturing cities in China. It is designated as an "important regional financial and business center" by the National Development and Reform Commission, the only pilot city for comprehensive reform of the scientific and technological system, and the first "Chinese Software City" in China.

In 2024, Nanjing achieved a regional gross domestic product of 1850.81 billion yuan, an increase of 4.5% over the previous year.
